Austin Food Roundup : Part 3

It's snowing sideways in Bloomington today, snowflakes coming down fast like rain. It's been over a month now since the trip. I can't help thinking that psychologically I've spread these posts out so I can re-live it all over again. Or maybe I'm just lazy. So, finally, day three of my lovely little trip to Austin.

Steph made us delicious yogurt parfaits for breakfast. Berries and dark chocolate peanut butter and granola and whipped honey and vanilla yogurt. Perfect way to start the day.

It was gorgeous and sunny and hot, so we did some walking and shopping and eating outside. There are some really awesome signs in Austin. I especially liked these two (oh and this one and this one.) And look what a nice day it was, 70 plus degrees. I even got a little bit of a sunburn, an extra souvenir to take back with me to snowy, icy, Indiana. For a real, permanent, souvenir I got a lovely necklace at Schatzelein Jewelry.

Lunch was a 'My Big Fat Greek Dog' from the food truck Man Bites Dog. The lamb merguez sausage was super flavorful, especially with the salty olives, tangy feta, creamy tzatsiki and fresh tomatoes and cucumbers.

Jessica and Stephanie picked up lunch from the Little Thai Food truck, just around the corner from the little complex that houses Man Bites Dog. That's Pad Kee Mao on the left and Pad See Eew on the right.

Mmm, churro. After lunch and a little more wandering/shopping we stopped at a Mexican bakery for some pastry and cold beverages. I love anything covered in cinnamon sugar.

Little cow shortbread. This would have been delicious with coffee.

Churro time, look at all of Jessica's awesome rings and pretty red nails!

After a brief rest back at Steph's place we did a some 6th Street exploration. I got a little touristy and bought a few magnets (a sparkly teal cowboy boot!) Dinner was a tacopalooza at Torchy's Tacos. One of the Torchy's locations is right around the corner from Stephanie's apartment.

The tacos were so so good. Above is Steph's Green Chile Pork Taco. I got one too, minus the cilantro and on a corn tortilla. I'm still thinking about that taco. The pork carnitas were so juicy and flavorful, studded with little bits of green chile.

On Stephanie's recommendation Jessica had the Fried Avocado Tacos. All vegetarian, these had deep fried avocado slices with refried beans, cheese and veg.

Torchy's has a nice little outside eating area, though it is quite close to a busy street.

Steph got a bonus taco. She ordered the Brushfire (Jamaican jerk chicken, mango, sour cream!) and either the pork or shrimp taco (I can't remember which!) But ended up with a pork and shrimp but no Brushfire. No problem, they made one quickly for her, unfortunately it wasn't our favorite. Steph didn't like the chicken, it didn't taste much like jerk.

I also had a Baja Shrimp Taco. It was fantastic. The shrimp tasted so fresh and I loved the crunchy cabbage and carrot slaw at the bottom. Steph got hers with the menu standard pickled onions and cilantro.

Overall, it was a great meal to end the trip. I can't wait to go back. In fact I know just what I'll order (The Democrat and Mr. Pink!) I already miss the sun and the food and shopping, and, most of all, Stephanie (why is Texas so far away!)

  1. Thanks Aubrey! I am so glad you stopped in Schatzelein. I haven't been to Little Thai yet but by the looks of it, I need to head down there soon. Pad Kee Mao is my favorite!
