More Cupcakes : Chicago

Savory cupcakes have been getting a lot of buzz lately and, in Chicago, More Cupcakes has been creating a lot of it. I read tons of articles and reviews of the BLT Cupcake at More. So, of course, we had to try it. Some of the yelp reviewers complained of having to wait a while but I visited (with Mariann and Ginny) early afternoon on a Friday and there was no line whatsoever.

The shop is small and very trendy, the employees wear all black and are kinda pretentious. The cupcakes are on display in a clear wall of shelves as you walk in so you can see what's available. After ogling the beautiful wall of cupcakes, I got a bit disappointed. The two cupcakes Mariann and I were most looking forward to were missing. The Salted Caramel for me and Brie Champagne for Mariann.

We got over our disappointment and chose the BLT, Mango Coconut, Chocolate Passionfruit, and Pumpkin cupcakes. We'll start with the good. The Mango Coconut Cupcake was awesome. The cake was light and delicate, with yummy coconut flavor. The icing was mangolicious, super fruity but still creamy. And the little rice crispy bits on the top added some nice crunch. The Pumpkin Cupcake was one of the daily specials and was good, but not particularly memorable (and not nearly as delicious as the Pumpkin Spice Cupcake at Molly's). The cake itself was really dense, more like pumpkin bread than cake.

The Chocolate Passionfruit Cupcake was a bit disappointing. Maybe I'm just biased against chocolate cupcakes but it was just too much boring chocolate cake, and the cupcake/icing ration felt wrong. The icing was passionfruit flavored and very tangy. I usually like fruit flavored desserts but something about this icing just tasted off. We didn't finish the cupcake.

We actually ate the BLT Cupcake first because we wanted to get it over with if it ended up being bad. That was a wise decision on our part. The cake had more of a muffin-like texture and was studded with bacon chunks. The frosting was basically just fluffy ranch dressing, plus a few cherry tomatoes on top. Out of the three of us, I probably tolerated the cupcake best, but still couldn't eat more than two bites. I honestly thought Mariann was going to throw up after one bite. She couldn't handle the baconcake. It's not that I dislike bacon/cupcake combo, I loved the Pancake Bacon Cupcake at Chicago Cupcakes, but the bacon in the BLT Cupcake was just too chewy and fatty. And the ranch frosting, I just couldn't do it. I can certainly understand how some people might enjoy it, but I couldn't, mentally, get over it. And are BLT's ever even served with ranch dressing?

Overall we weren't particularly impressed with More Cupcakes. I would like to go back and try the Salted Caramel and Brie Champagne cupcakes but I won't be trying super hard to get back there. For cupcakes in Chicago, so far, my favorites are definitely Molly's Cupcakes and Swirlz. More Cupcakes felt cold and pretentious, while the atmostphere at both Molly's and Swirlz is friendly and inviting. And the cupcakes are better too!

  2. Thanks Kyle. I am without internet at home right now, so I'm finding it really difficult to post. But I'll try harder! I definitely have a few Btown restaurants to review soon.
